Does the tighten fuel cap message affect emissions on a 2006 Acura TL?

Yes. The message triggers when the EVAP system detects a leak, which means hydrocarbon vapors can escape the fuel system. While the car remains drivable, the check engine light will likely accompany the message, causing an automatic emissions test failure in most jurisdictions.

Is the tighten fuel cap message a common problem for the 2006 Acura TL?

It is one of the most frequently reported issues for this model year. Owner forums and repair databases consistently rank loose or failed fuel caps among the top reported concerns, alongside other EVAP-related components such as the purge valve and vent solenoid.

Can I clear the tighten fuel cap message myself without a scan tool?

You may be able to reset it by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for approximately 15 minutes and driving the vehicle through a complete drive cycle. However, the message will return if the underlying issue is not resolved. A proper OBD-II scan tool is recommended for accurate diagnosis.
