Understanding the December 2025 Telugu Calendar System

The Telugu calendar, also known as the Telugu Samvatsara or Bhakta Kabira Panchangam framework, follows a lunisolar reckoning — meaning months are defined by lunar cycles while years are anchored to solar positions. This dual system ensures that festivals remain tied to both moon phases and seasonal agriculture, a feature that has sustained South Asian calendrical continuity for over two millennia.

In December 2025, the Gregorian month maps onto two Telugu lunar months:

1.1 Margashirsha Masam (मार्गशीर्ष मास)

Duration: Approximately December 1–19, 2025 (amanta / krishna paksha reckoning may vary by panchangam source).

Margashirsha is widely regarded as the most sacred month in the Vaishnava and Shaiva liturgical calendars. It is traditionally believed that simply naming Margashirsha confers spiritual merit, and bathing in holy rivers during this period is considered equivalent to performing a thousand ashvamedha yajnas. For Telugu devotees, the month begins with deep devotion and sets the tone for year-end spiritual reset.

1.2 Pausha Masam (पौष मास)

Duration: Approximately December 20, 2025 – January 18, 2026.

Pausha marks the onset of the winter solstice period and is associated with daana (charity) and tapas (austerity). The Pausha Pournami full moon is particularly significant, marking the birthday of Lord Dattatreya in many traditions. In Telugu household practice, Pausha is when families begin preparing for Sankranti, creating a natural bridge between two major festival seasons.
